Crystals 101: a Beginners Guide to Crystal Healing and Meditation

Let’s start off with a disclaimer. DO NOT assume that crystals are going to heal your cancer, diabetes, or other chronic illness. That is not what I claim. I believe that crystals are wonderful tools, which can lead to more mindfulness and emotional tranquility. Spirituality in any form is wonderful for your mental health, and I believe that when you are mentally healthy, all body systems improve. What works for me, might feel silly to you. However, if this is something that interests you, I encourage you to take the leap and give it a shot! Also, I will be using some language that may seem unusual, but I have no other way to describe it. Prepare for words like, “energy” or “vibration” even “journey”. Sorry if it weirds you out!
Before you enter your local rock/crystal shop, I recommend you analyze what you believe you are currently lacking, emotionally or otherwise. If you’re like me, you might want to invest in a crystal that has properties that are relaxing, anti-anxiety, and transformative. If you’re feeling depressed, maybe a crystal with joyful properties could benefit you. Maybe you feel great, and want to feel even better. You can research ahead, or simply look around and see what you’re drawn to. Another thing that must be considered is what you are willing to spend. I am lucky enough to live very close to a very affordable, family run rock shop. However, the majority of shops that sell crystals are branded as spiritual, holistic healing, or in layman’s terms “hippie” shops. Remember, in these places, you are not only paying for a crystal, but for the atmosphere! My trick is to head into the rustic looking shops when you are on a budget, and you will find great piece for a great price! They are truly “hidden gems”, get it?
There are SO MANY varieties of rocks, crystals, and gems. You might be asking yourself, “Where do I even start”? I can tell you without a doubt, I believe the two crystals you should begin your collection with are Clear Quartz and Selenite. Clear Quartz is known as the “master healing crystal” that has a powerful, balancing energy. Just like protein strengthens and energizes the body, clear quartz can strengthen and energize the emotional body. Selenite is also a very interesting crystal, known for its cleansing and spiritual energy. Many, including myself, will use Selenite has a natural cleanser for your other crystals and stones. Other awesome beginner crystals are Rose Quartz (love), Amethyst (anti-anxiety), Citrine (prosperity and confidence), Black Tourmaline (grounding), and Labradorite (transformation).
When you walk into any shop, they will likely have more than one of crystal you are looking for. When choosing from a group, pick up multiple crystals and allow yourself to hold each. The one you are most drawn to is the one you should pick, whether it is the look, feel, or energy that pulls you in. It’s often said that you don’t pick your crystals, they pick you, and I feel that is very true. Also, keep in mind, you may walk into the shop expecting to come out with say, a Rose Quartz, but you’ll leave the shop with a Labradorite. Be open and take your time, you won’t be disappointed.
So, you get your crystal home and you set it down and stare at it. “Now what?” Therein lies the beauty of crystals. You can do whatever you want. Something I always recommend, if you want to get the most out of your crystals, is to activate and cleanse them. To activate your crystal, you look, hold, and try to make a connection with your crystal. Try to feel the vibration and energy, and impart your intention into the crystal. Intention, meaning, what you would like this crystals effect to be. Crystals are like little sponges, and they absorb energies of what is around them, positive or negative. To cleanse your crystals of negative energies, place near or on a Selenite pyramid or wand, even consider cleansing with Sage or Palo Santo wood. There are numerous cleansing techniques and rituals out there, try and find what you like best. Again, crystals are not science, and there is no way to do it right or do it wrong. Even if you just use them as decoration for your home, they can make a difference.
Finally, we have incorporating crystals into your meditative practice. I use them as a reminder of my intention. Call it a self-fulfilling prophecy, but I find that putting my mental and emotional goals into a physical object (like a crystal) makes me feel the effects so much more. When I lack motivation, and I look at my Aragonite, I am reminded of my goals. They aid me in my self-care, and have helped me immensely. To meditate with your crystals, the trick is, just try it! When you have put your intention into your crystals, utilizing those crystals in meditation can help focus your meditation. I have found that when I do this, I am more relaxed, I feel recharged, and I am able to remain mindful. If you’re new to meditation, you can listen to some guided meditations on YouTube, or google some techniques. Breathing and focus are very important, and breath should be deep and slow, focus should be on clearing mind or your intention. I’ll include some of my go-to techniques below.
